Where can I find a counselor who is affirming, understanding and embraces a positive view of the LGBTQ+ community? Where can I find a counselor who understands gay pride and what it means to me to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, genderfluid or nonbinary? The process can be difficult and even overwhelming. You deserve a counselor who is not only an ally but has the knowledge to provide a judgment free space to speak freely about your thoughts, feelings, relationships, and behaviors. I can provide this safe space for you. Whether you are struggling with mental health issues (such as anxiety, stress, or life transitions), your identity, or just need someone to talk to, counseling services should be readily available to everyone without restrictions. Research shows individuals in the LGBTQ+ community sometimes suffer from mental health issues at a higher rate. I want you to know I support you and your family and I provide counseling services with dignity and respect. Counseling sessions with me are filled with honesty, openness, and consideration. You are fine, just the way you are.

I treat my LGBTQ+ clients using a set of principles that help me offer an atmosphere of acceptance and also help me remain an effective counselor.

  • I will affirm your language, life experiences, be with you where you are in your life, and not assume you are in my office for a specific reason.

  • I will advocate for the services you need such as medical care or specific community resources.

  • I will remain self aware of my own personal work surrounding gender identity, sexual orientation, and my own privilege in the community.

  • I will work to understand the intersectionality between all of your life experiences such as gender identity, sexual orientation, family of origin, education, health, etc.

  • I will not make assumptions about your life, relationships, family, or experiences. I will ask questions when clarification is necessary.

  • I recognize the discrimination you experience in parts of your life such as crime, physical harm, and discrimination. And I understand this may affect your overall mood and well-being.

  • I will work to advocate for and foster positive social change for members of the LGBTQ+ community with other medical and mental health professionals and members of the community.
